Your brake bias is arguably one of the most important factors in a finely tuned racecar — it affects your ability to brake hard and stay in control mid-skid, or simply brake well entering a corner. Too much front bias and you lose stopping power because the rear brakes aren't engaging enough; too much rear bias and you risk the back end kicking out as you brake. Learning what makes a good setup is an excellent start. Do you need slotted rotors? Don't buy drilled. Why would I want to upgrade to a higher coefficient of friction (CoF) brake pad? What are the differences between monoblock (fixed calipers) vs floating calipers?Learning what parts to get and how your car responds to poor bias is the way to go, or just pay someone loads of money to hopefully do the job well.
Brake parts overview:
• CoF: "Coefficient of Friction". How agressive the pads are.
• Bias: varies from car to car, should be about 70/30.
• Monoblock/Fixed calipers: pistons on both side of rotor, are designed to absorb heat better than floating calipers.
• Floating calipers: pistons on one side, they do not perform well under high heat. These generally are fine as rear brakes.
• Manual vs powered brakes: If your car is boosted you may have issues with vacuum assisted brakes. Look into hydrobrakes or electric assisted. Manual brakes would need to be larger than the OE setup.
In the end, learn the terms, figure out what you want, but still consult an expert or shop for safety.
